When I left class today, there was a 1st Gen Honda Ridgeline and an egg shape Ford Taurus hooning about in this lot. It was completely empty and I didn’t film or get a photo of them because I didn’t want them to think I was going to report them. They looked like they were having a blast.

I drifted through it earlier coming to class =D

There is a part of the bay here that gets plowed off for ice racing, and when the racers arent using it, it’s not uncommon to see people just racing their car around the track or doing donuts on the pit area/parking lot.

yesterday on my way home i saw 4 or 5 cars out there and thought “I should go join those guys” and i did. a couple half serious laps with an Impreza wagon, everyone stayed a comfortable distance from each other and slowed down, or even stop completely when some one spun out. It was the most hooning fun I’ve had in awhile. I only went off track once, but kept in mind “when in doubt throttle out” and kept right on trunking.

Reminds me of my designated “ hoon lot” at the local community college. Would rip through it whenever I had class.

I did this over the weekend in my new( -to-me) Audi A6 , had a blast!

Girlfriend: Why are you turning the traction control off?

Me: Hold on!

Also this weekend gave me an appreciation for what the traction control does, it definitely gets squirrely with it off.

Guy was killed while hooning around an office park here. Fell out of the car he was a passenger in and was run over: https://www.reddit.com/r/Waltham/comments/7hnkm7/fatal_car_accident_on_friday/

Can’t find the story now, but read one report saying he was in a Jeep with the doors off (sort of an odd choice for hooning, but maybe it’s what they had). His friends have covered the street below the office park with memorial burnouts (The office park started posting a security guard at the entrance at night) .

I think I remember that story. What an awful thi ng to happen.

That being said... Seat belts, how do they work?

Can confirm, the last week and a half on my campus have taught me much as far as what traction control does, as my Golf has none and they just kind of don’t plow the roads here, even though we got like six inches of accumulation. So yeah, lots of countersteering, ripping the handbrake to clear a corner (probably unnecessarily ), tons of sliding around. Plus, doing all that and parallel parking without power steering, which seems to be completely gone now. Cool. What have I learned? Traction control is, indeed, dumb and I hate it. But if you want your car to behave predictably and not have to be constantly correcting it and thinking about how your weight is transferring, it is a necessity.

I may or may not have done 60 mph in a college parking lot on several occasions.

Haha yeah, my ‘97 Jetta didn’t have TC, but it was a champ in the snow and quite predictable.

However with a much higher power rear wheel biased Audi, and a heavy left foot, it gets a bit hairy. I think if were to drive more grandmother-like the TC wouldn’t be at all necessary.

But damn! It’s downright addicting to give it a dollop of throttle to kick out the rear end. It was similarly fun with the Jetta + handbreak, much like I imagine it is in your Golf.

Oh yeah, the Golf will kick out the back in a corner with handbrake on a dry road. It does handle predictably- the unpredictability comes in when the power steering decides “hey, I actually do work” when I’m mid corner, which happens time to time.

I see where you’re going if you’re talking about hooning , but that’s also perfectly feasible at an autocross event (which would be more legal and safe). I'll advocate that to anyone who's interested.

I did a couple of donuts in a college parking lot on a Sunday. The cops caught up with me a mile down the road. The smarmy security guard that reported me showed up five minutes later. The cops wrote a ticket based on his word.

I did those speeds testing our FSAE car. Campus police was aware of what we were doing, though I'm not sure if they are fully aware of how fast the car is capable of going.

I assumed incorrectly because of the "may or may not have..." You got me.
